Clearing the Ground
My little garden area was covered in about three inches of leaves, sticks and a variety of
other yard debris that has found a new home in the compost heap or the trash can. And just
look what was hiding under there! At least three types of landscaping stones, large edging
stones of all shapes and sizes and, most special of all, some blocks that the previous owners
of our house salvaged (with full permission!) from a church here in Chattanooga that had to be
torn down.
As we were clearing away the mess that had been hiding them, I was struck by the fact that
each of these types of stones was left behind by those who lived here before us. Natural river
stones, by one, white pebbles that were so popular in the 1950’s, lava rock from the 70’s,
bricks from when someone put in the patio outside the basement, and blocks from this project
and that. Those who came before saw the beauty of this little hidden space and now it’s my
turn.
